Our 7 Reasons for Visiting the Grampians in Winter & Spring

Here’s our list of 7 awesome reasons to visit the fabulous Grampians during Winter and Spring!

  1. WATERFALLS

We are lucky that there are some of Victoria’s and Australia’s best waterfalls right here in the Grampians with the most well-known being one of our local waterfalls in the Grampians which runs all year around, these are the MacKenzie Falls, located in the Northern part of the Grampians. Following the fires in 2014 Parks Victoria worked tirelessly and have created an amazing infrastructure so all types of walkers with different abilities can experience the falls. The fit and mobile can walk to the bottom of the stairs (just remember what goes down must come up…..whew….) and experience the stunning falls. If you are keen on exploring a little more, we recommend walking to Zummsteins and check out the Fish Falls on your way! For the less able, Parks has made an easily accessible path (approx 900 meters) which takes you to the lookout and you can see the views from the top – fabulous!

There are other wonderful waterfalls too and generally, the rock faces of the Silverband Falls, Clematis Falls, Beehive Falls & Kalimna Falls start turning into lovely cascades as of early May, but of course this is rainfall dependant so keep an eye on the weather and feel blessed when it rains, this is great for all these fabulous falls.

  1. STUNNINGLY SUBLIME SHIRAZ

The Grampians is world-renowned for its Shiraz and after a day of exploring the Grampians, breathing in some of that clean, crisp air you can settle back on your deck or, if on a site, enjoy a campfire at night with that delicious glass of Shiraz you’ve just bought!

Coming from Melbourne driving to Halls Gap you pass through the gorgeous little town of Great Western where you will find Bests Winery, Seppelts and Grampians Estate, all of which are award winning wineries. Between Lake Fyans and Halls Gap, just 10 minutes from us you can visit both Pomonal Estate for their wonderful Reisling & Shiraz they also do great ciders or Fallen Giants Winery, also known for their Shiraz, Cabernet and Riesling.

  1. COSY CAMPFIRES

It seems to be getting harder and harder to find destinations where they allow campfires. Being able to sit at your campsite around a cosy campfire is such a wonderful part of camping, with city life being so busy and structured, what better way to unwind than sitting at your site and staring at the dancing flames, having a chat, toasting marshmallows and sipping on that delicious shiraz you’ve just bought!

  1. PERFECT HIKING WEATHER

The Grampians is well known for its stunning National Park and its amazing hiking tracks. Hiking during winter and spring is a far more pleasant experience than sweltering in the soaring heat of summer so get those boots on and head for the nearest walk. There are some many choices from beginners to the more experienced hiker, just ask at reception and we can recommend which ones and provide you with a local area map.

  1. NO CROWDS

Located in the heart of the Grampians is the lovely village of Halls Gap, it is a very popular tourist destination and attracts 100s of 1000s of visitors a year. Visiting during winter and spring means you escape the busy crowds so come and enjoy ambience, fabulous food, craft coffee and even the incredible ice cream – after all – it’s never too cold for ice cream!!

  1. GRAMPIANS GRAPE ESCAPE

Get ready to plan your Grampians Grape Escape weekend for 2019 where the oval at Halls Gap will turn into a magnificent celebration filled with taste sensations and great music. It is a weekend for fabulous food, wonderful wine, and good times and all set at the base of the majestic Grampians. A very well organised food and wine festival, with cooking classes, demonstrations and all the local wineries and producers in attendance.

  1. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST ………………………………….. THE SUNRISES & SUNSETS

The sunrises & sunsets at the Grampians and those that can be seen from Lake Fyans offer a truly unique, spectacular, unimaginable, memorable sight and none more so than sitting down at the edge of lake Fyans rugged up in your warm coat and snuggly scarf watching the sun go down over the lake and the outline of those gorgeous majestic hills.
